Alpha GPC is found in tiny quantities in certain foods like organ meats, dairy products, and wheat germ. However, the concentrations in food are much lower than what is typically used in supplements. Most alpha GPC supplements are produced synthetically by enzymatically modifying soy or sunflower lecithin. This process involves removing two of the fatty acids from phosphatidylcholine, a type of phospholipid abundant in lecithin. Some consider alpha GPC to be a semi-synthetic derivative of lecithin due to this production method.

Chemical Structure and Properties

The scientific name for alpha GPC is (2R)-2,3-dihydroxypropyl 2-(trimethylammonio)ethyl phosphate. Its molecular formula is C8H20NO6P and it has a molecular weight of 257.22 g/mol. Alpha GPC is a white, odorless, crystalline powder that is very soluble in water. Chemically, it consists of choline connected to a glycerophosphate molecule. The glycerophosphate component is what distinguishes alpha GPC from other choline-containing compounds like choline bitartrate or citicoline.

Metabolism and Mechanisms of Action

When ingested, alpha GPC is rapidly absorbed in the gut and can easily cross the blood-brain barrier. It is then metabolized into choline and glycerophosphate. The choline is used to synthesize acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for memory, attention, and muscle contraction. Meanwhile, the glycerophosphate helps support cellular membranes in the brain. By increasing acetylcholine levels and phospholipid turnover, alpha GPC may help optimize neural communication and counter age-related cognitive decline.
